What is pyometra?
Pyometra usually occurs due to the hormonal changes of female dog's reproductivesystem. It is also known as uterus infection.
Why it occurs?
After the heat cycle, the cervix of a female dog relaxes, allowing bacteria and foreign pathogens to access the uterus, causing the thickness of the uterus wall causing infection.
Type of Pyometra
1. Open Pyometra: Comes with bloody foul smelling discharge mixed with pus and blood. 2. Closed pyometra: difficult to detect as there is no discharge occurs.
It eventually increases the creatinine level in dog leading them to have kidney infection and failure.
Treatments Available
The most effective treatment is surgical removal of uterus. Only medication will not work for long terms as there are possibilities of recurring infections.
Risk of the surgery
1. Overweight could invite complications with anesthesia.2. Improper vitals.3. Pyometra's criticality.4. Pet's medical history in the past.
Preventing Pyometra
1. Maintaining hygiene during heat cycle.2. Do not go for walk for few days.3. If pyometra occurs consult a vet immediately.4. More water intake helps in kidney cleansing.
